First up is the Indiana Commission on State Tax and Financing Policy, a group of five legislators who are voting members with some advisers that include some top fiscal minds. This commission is looking to recommend a number of changes in the property-tax system. Among the questions it has been considering: Should property taxes be eliminated completely? Does the assessment system need an overhaul? Are abatements for corporations pushing homeowners' bills higher?
When the commission meets Sept. 17, it will discuss whether landlords should get tax breaks similar to or the same as those offered on owner-occupied properties.
You can have your say by attending that meeting, at 1 p.m. in Room 404 of the Statehouse.
But you can also provide information to the commission by going to www.propertytaxreform.in.gov. There, you watch previous commission meetings, read about taxes and send in testimony. You can even take a crack at choosing what taxes could replace property taxes by using a property-tax calculator created by Sen. David Ford, R-Hartford City.
