A caution on Indiana's economy

The Indianapolis Star has a small cautionary note on the state's job creation efforts. Somehow, "...the figure is subject to revision as government analysts receive more detailed information in coming months" just does not cut it. Taking Down Words weighed in on this yesterday.

We deserve more than this stroking by the Daniels administration. The reality is that economy still sucks and most everyone I talk to is saying that business is bad. The reality is that there is a lot of work to do in improving life for us in Hoosierland. Daniels and his crew can blame the Democrats for our economy and hope that nobody pays close attention to the facts. Well, so far that has worked for him. The truth is that we are where we are because of the Republicans as much as the Democrats.

O'Bannon tried moving us to high tech but the General Assembly cut the funding for his programs to move us in that direction. No budget in this state gets passed without the Republican Senate. The budget gets pressured by federal mandates. When O'Bannon vetoed a budget, both the houses of the General Assembly voted to override. Finally, we have been lazy in relying upon automobile manufacturing as the basis for our economy. Workers want UAW wages and the politicians want to keep those property taxes that the huge plants brought into local coffers.
