For the second straight year, North Carolina had the highest inbound migration rate, with 61.6 percent of moves into the state. Nevada was second (59.4 percent), followed by the District of Columbia (58.5 percent), Oregon (58.4 percent), and Alabama (57.9 percent).
Other states in the West and South also ranked high on the inbound list, including South Dakota with 57.4 percent of moves inbound.
However, neighboring North Dakota was second only to Michigan in outbound moves. Michigan, with a struggling economy tied to problems in the auto industry, saw 67.8 percent outbound migration last year. The study showed that 67.2 percent of moves in North Dakota were heading out, followed by New Jersey (61 percent), New York (59.4 percent) and Illinois (57.6 percent).
Other Great Lakes states high on the outbound list were Indiana (56.4 percent) and Wisconsin (54.6 percent).
