Stanley Fish on Why Democracy?

Too much here to put into bit-sized quotes. Just take a look at Why Democracy?, it is a lot of food for thought.

I quote the last paragraph:
Please let me know what you would have said to this and the other questions. Or go online and enter the conversation directly at www.whydemocracy.net and www.myspace.com/whydemocracy.
After posting this I had a thought I want to add here. Lenin, Mussolini and Hitler (take a look at the Wikipedia entries for all) came to power via elections. That might shock some. Probably not Aristotle (see here and here) and certainly not our Founding Fathers. Democracy meant to them mob rule. Take a look at The Federalist Papers. Our government is more or less democratic but not a democracy. Democracy must be more than a form but an attitude that ordinary people have the right to govern themselves without some self-appointed intermediary.
