No, not mine. All of our families in poverty. I recalled a report that Indiana taxes people below the poverty line (but have not been able to find it this afternoon) when I saw this headline in the Sunday Herald e-mail alert: Child Poverty: The Solutions. I read it and realized that the problem exists in many places and not all foreign ideas are inapplicable to here.
I really do believe no single solution exists for dealing with poverty. I do not disagree with the idea that some people are in poverty because of their own actions. Government cannot solve the problem by itself.
What I disagree with is that we can ignore the damage done by governmental policy and blame it on the individual. Those that want to rise above themselves should be given every opportunity to do so.
Socialism? Sure. Unless you live in a hermetically sealed world, most of government is socialism. That does demand defining socialism as spreading society's costs across the community. Besides we are supposed to be a Christian country and is not charity a Christian virtue? Much better use for religious feelings than embedding bigotry in Indiana's Constitution.
