Indiana Blog Reading

I thought I would take some time to check out the Indiana political blogs today.

Advance Indiana notes the Indianapolis Star highlighted the Republican mayoral candidate on its front page (Schneider: The Marine Who Would Be Mayor), has more posts criticizing Bart Peterson (Peterson Promises Fall Short, Believe It Or Not, and http://advanceindiana.blogspot.com/2007/10/petersons-ad-misrepresents-true-plight.html), and one knocking Jim Schellinger (A Penny For Diamond Jim). Advance Indiana ponders the mysteries of the Marion County Republican Party and their strategy for this election. I was surprised that the Star had this huge front page article on Ballard. I do not see it doing any good. Another point from AI that caught my attention is this:
Some of these top dogs in the Democratic Party will kick Schellinger to the curb quicker than they kicked Joe Andrew four years ago after Gov. Frank O'Bannon died and his successor Joe Kernan was convinced to run for a full term. These Democrats fear an all but certain Ann Delaney-like candidate in Jill Long Thompson unless drastic steps are taken now. With the likelihood of Hillary Clinton topping their national ticket, these Democrats fear a complete meltdown if Thompson is at the top of the statewide ticket below Clinton.
Gee, I am not sure that the rank and file are actually thinking that much about the governor's race for next year. We are trying to get bills paid.

The Bilerico Project leads with a post about Senator Craig (the airport restroom Republican) getting into the Idaho Hall of Fame. They also have a post from yesterday about ENDA - Fight for Inclusive ENDA Heats Up. ENDA is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. I have not had time to read up on this but I do not see this as a bad thing. They also have another ENDA post: ENDA Update: Pelosi Promises Inclusive ENDA Vote Once Enough Support Is Secured.

I knew nothing of Berry Street Beacon until this afternoon. Thanks to Blue Indiana's blog roll, I found this Fort Wayne blog. It leads with FDR, THE FEAR OF POLIO, AND THOUGHTS OF HISTORY and has some very long posts, with good writing and great photos. I am taking a great liking to this blog. She brings up some points on Mitch Daniels I did not know in MITCH DANIELS - POSTER CHILD FOR BRAIN DRAIN. In fact, let me excerpt this bit from her post:
A number of months ago, I wrote a post providing a summary of Daniels’ background. For those of you who missed that post, let me restate some of his biography:

1. Born in Pennsylvania in 1949
2. Spent his early childhood in Georgia
3. Moved to Indiana in 1959 at the age of 10 with his parents
4. Attended North Central High School in Indianapolis
5. Skiddadled out of Indiana at the age of 18 to earn a bachelor’s degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1971
6. Avoided the draft due to status as a college student
7. Came back to Indiana and worked as part of Richard Lugar’s staff from 1971-1977
8. Followed Lugar to Washington, DC and worked in various positions in DC from 1977-1987
9. Earned a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979
10. Returned to Indiana in 1987 and worked in corporate positions and corporate boardrooms from 1987-2001
11. Returned to Washington, DC to “manage” the Office of Management and Budget and oversaw a $236 billion surplus turn into a $400 billion deficit in his 29-month tenure
12. Decided to split from his unsuccessful stint as OMB Director and returned to Indiana to run for governor in 2003
13. Put on a flannel shirt, hopped into an RV, and traveled the State with his “aw shucks” routine - playing the Hoosier he never was and never will be.
I remember the Republicans lambasting Evan Bayh for being a Washingtonian and not a Hoosier. This list makes me wonder even more about Daniels. There are a few posts on Jill Thompson Long (JILL LONG THOMPSON SPEAKS TO GRANT COUNTY DEMOCRAT WOMEN’S CLUB and JILL LONG THOMPSON IN STRONGEST POSITION TO DEFEAT DANIELS).

Another new one is Anger Management. Quite appropriately titled, too. The writer might not have meant the posts to be so damned funny but I found some of them to be hilarious. See Jerusalem, and A Few Things I've learned.... A Paratrooper in real life and a liberal. I suggest that he keep on writing.

I checked out Clark County Indiana Democrats today. Not many posts but again some good writing and pictures. (I do need to get the digital camera away from the kids and the wife). For anyone wondering why they should vote, do read Can you hear me now?. Oh, yeah, I got a good laugh out of Who Flung Dung.

Eye on Indianapolis has several posts on Monroe Gray. one on the re-opening of the Marion County Library and a notice that Dan Wakefield returns this month to Indianapolis.
Indianapolis native Dan Wakefield, author of the best-selling novels "Going All the Way" and "Starting Over," will speak at 7:30 p.m. 25 October in the Krannert Room of Clowes Memorial Hall on the campus of Butler University as part of the 2007-08 Vivian S. Delbrook Visiting Writers Series. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 317:940-9861.
I saw Wakefield several years ago at Clowes with Kurt Vonnegut, Jr and John Updike. He is worth going to hear.

I know i have not checked out Left in Aboite in quite a while. The post for today is The Great Underground Obama Smear Campaign. I completely unaware of things like this:
Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background,” warns an e-mail titled “Who Is Barack Obama”. “The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out; what better way to start than at the highest level?” “Please forward to everyone you know,” it ended.
What BS. Frankly, I think Obama has the qualities to get himself elected President. There are some posts on things I was not aware of or only took a glance at: NSA sought warrantless wiretaps PRE-9/11 and President Carter: I'd Rather Redo the 2000 Election Than the 1980 Election. Then there is this post on Ann Coulter: Your good deed of the day. (The beauty of conservatism? Not sure if that is being ironic or completely on the mark). On the other hand, I was just about overwhelmed by a tsunami of nostalgia with this post: Friday Nite Retro. My first fiance was a huge Huey Lewis fan. I remember buying the first album, not being impressed, but she sure was.

Liberal Indiana has kind of disappeared. Here is what is at the site now:

Liberal Indiana

Advancing Liberal Ideas in a Conservative State

Hey - what happened to the site?

I'll tell you what happened - it was hijacked by spammers and sploggers!

Liberal Indiana will return with a new mission some time in early 2008.

Monticello has a post on Korea, Peace In Korea? Run For the Hills!. Just in case anyone thinks we might be boring political wonks, Monticello has some interesting music/video posts: Weekend Videos With Niswander- Spontaneous Show and Modern Inspirational Music.

Torpor Indiana has been quiet for about a month. The last post is Rerun Post--from September 11, 2006.

The Centerline is another Fort Wayne blog. Lot of posts about Kelty for mayor.

Masson's Blog has a post on a graph showing how our federal tax dollars are spent, Tax Graph and he also picked up on the NSA seeking information from the telephone company without warrants and prior to 9/11 (Telcos, the NSA, and the SEC).

Finally, Taking Down Words. The top article is Hoosier Billions: New York Times Tracks States Eyeing Lottery Deals. Somewhere in this blog is a post I wrote attacking the idea of privatizing the lottery. There are good reasons for government control of a lottery. Remember privatizing is not the same as opening the lottery to market forces. Doing that would be horrendous but only a little less terrible would substituting a private monopoly for a public one. Read this post. Ms. Wagner makes some very good comments against the idea. Others I found interesting are: The Perry Thrust: Guv, GOP Senators Dispute I-69 Route Control, and Certified For Now: IBJ Looks At Tech Parks, Shelbyville's Joke Of One.
